Limassol signs €9.2 million contract to replace old water pipes

Limassol, Cyprus. Water pipes in Limassol are to be replaced after the district government signed a contract with a contractor for a project it says will upgrade, modernise and strengthen the city’s water infrastructure.

Contract signed

The €9.2 million project is scheduled to begin next month and be completed by the end of July 2028. District governor Yiannis Tsouloftas, district government general manager Socrates Metaxas and An. Christou properties and constructions Ltd director Christos Christou signed the agreement.

Project details

Tsouloftas said the work will replace the existing outdated water network in the centre of Limassol with a new water distribution network designed with modern concepts and constructed from modern materials. The area covered will extend to around 2.6 square kilometres and serve about 40,000 people in the city’s old centre.

Expected benefits

He said the project is expected to reduce damages and water losses, save resources, lower the cost of operating and maintaining the network and improve the quality of service provision. He also said it will ensure better quality drinking water.

City reaction and funding

Limassol mayor Yiannis Armeftis also welcomed the signing, saying that while the works will cause disruption, the project “forms the basis for us to be able to build for the future”. The district government said the project was made possible through funding secured from the European Union’s cohesion fund.
