Nicosia to host EU conference on mosquito-borne diseases amid rising public health concerns

Nicosia, Cyprus. A conference on mosquito-borne diseases will take place in Nicosia on Wednesday, which the health ministry described on Monday as a critical juncture for public health in Europe. The event is being held as part of Cyprus’ presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Conference focus

Attendees will share experiences from recent outbreaks, including the appearance of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in Cyprus, and discuss challenges and innovative approaches to mosquito control.

Public health coordination

The conference aims to strengthen European disease coordination and improve cross-border public health preparedness.

Growing threat

The health ministry said vector-borne diseases, especially those transmitted by mosquitoes, are an increasing public health threat. It said climate change and the expanding geographic movement of mosquitoes have contributed to the spread of diseases.

Official statement

“Mosquito-borne diseases pose a growing challenge that requires enhanced preparedness, surveillance and coordinated European action,” the ministry said.

Participants and disease risks

Participants include the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, national public health authorities, representatives from the European Commission, and other scientists and experts.

Emerging disease threats cited in connection with the conference include dengue fever, chikungunya virus, Zika virus, yellow fever and West Nile virus.
