Oroklini, Cyprus. Oroklini officials said the area’s coastline is facing significant erosion and subsidence, describing the situation as complex and worsening. They said the municipality is working with consultants and the government while urging immediate solutions.
Erosion reported along full length of walkway
Oroklini deputy mayor Neophytos Fakonti and Larnaca technical services head Neophytoula Angelidou said on Tuesday that there are problems with beach erosion and subsidence along the coastline.
Angelidou said projects have been carried out to address the issue, including installing breakwaters and removing a vertical jetty near the Lebay Hotel. She said erosion continues along the entire length of the walkway, regardless of whether there are piles or foundations, and that it has intensified, especially after the removal of the vertical pier.
Municipality cites safety concerns and inspections
Angelidou said the municipality has appointed two consultants and is working closely with the government, while the public works department remains the main authority on the matter.
She said the municipality has taken safety measures for the public, but that many citizens do not comply, leading to frequent inspections in the area. She added that the issue is not isolated and described it as a national problem.
Call for root-cause analysis and rapid solutions
Angelidou said safety problems, aesthetic deterioration and soil subsidence have been recorded in the area, and urged that immediate solutions be provided so results could be seen soon.
She said identifying the root cause is necessary before seeking solutions, warning that otherwise resources would be wasted without delivering meaningful results.
Reference to 2010 study
Asked why the issue persists despite millions of euros spent on projects and studies, Fakonti referred to a study conducted by the Technical University of Athens in 2010.
