Paphos acting mayor condemns festival waste, says offending vendors will be barred next year

Paphos, Cyprus. Acting mayor Angelos Onisiforou on Tuesday condemned the waste left behind after the Kataklysmos festival in Paphos and said stall operators responsible will not be licensed to operate at next year’s event.

Waste left behind

Onisiforou shared photos showing rubbish strewn on pavements and described the scenes as a “disgrace to our city.” He said those who behave in this way should not expect to be granted a permit to operate at Kataklysmos next year.

Festival and cleanup

Kataklysmos, also known as the Festival of the Flood, is a water-themed celebration held to coincide with Pentecost, the 50th day after Easter. This year’s festival was held on June 1 as part of a three-day weekend of events at seaside locations around the island, with temporary vendors selling traditional foods.

Municipal response

Onisiforou also praised municipal staff for cleaning the area after the festival and said they “worked immediately to rectify this unacceptable situation.” He added: “Our city is not a garbage dump. Paphos demands and deserves respect.”
