Paralimni, Cyprus. A memorial service honouring those who died during the 1974 coup and Turkish invasion was held in Paralimni on Sunday. The annual religious service also included prayers for missing persons.
Memorial service
The ceremony took place at Saint George’s Church and was presided over by Bishop Vasilios of Famagusta. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris represented the government.
Paralimni Mayor Giorgos Nikolettos delivered the memorial speech.
Tribute to those affected
Nikolettos said the sacrifice of those who fell in 1974 “does not only belong to the past” but is a legacy for future generations.
He said the coup and subsequent Turkish invasion left behind “dead, missing, refugees and a divided homeland”.
The mayor referred to 15 fallen and missing men from Paralimni, including Major General Tasos Markou, whom he described as having remained committed to his duty.
He also mentioned Tasos Isaak and Solomos Solomou, saying their memory formed part of the continuing struggle for freedom and reunification.
Wreath laying
Wreaths were laid at the Heroes’ Monument following the service.
Nikolettos said the municipality would continue supporting efforts to determine the fate of missing persons and preserve historical memory, including through monuments dedicated to those affected by past events. He said the sacrifice of the fallen should continue to guide future generations.
