Nicosia, Cyprus. Police are not currently involved in investigations related to the Mafia State case and are awaiting instructions from the team of independent investigators, police spokesman Vyron Vyronos said on Monday.
The government appointed the investigators after an anti-corruption authority report found that former president Nicos Anastasiades and others could face criminal liability for alleged abuse of power.
Police response
Vyronos said the anti-corruption authority’s findings had been forwarded to police chief Themistos Arnaoutis, but police members had not yet reviewed the report.
“We are standing by and awaiting instructions from the criminal investigators,” Vyronos said.
He added that police were ready to assist the investigators if requested.
Independent investigation team
The independent investigators were appointed in early July following the anti-corruption authority’s examination of claims made in journalist Makarios Drousiotis’ book Mafia State.
One of the original five investigators, Christos Mylonopoulos, later recused himself. Criminologist Ilias Anagnostopoulos was appointed last week as his replacement.
Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said last week that the investigators’ requirements were being addressed, including office space and administrative support staff.
