Limassol, Cyprus. Rialto Theatre will present a series of theatre productions, film screenings, music and dance performances throughout May. The programme will culminate with the start of the 27th Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival at the end of the month.
To Vouni closes its run
On May 10, the third and final performance of the play To Vouni will take place. Louiza Papaloizou’s award-winning novel is adapted and directed by Maria Kyriakou, bringing to the stage the world of Xenis, the Daughter, and the Swede in a setting where memory, loss and the search for identity intersect.
Oedipus Tyrannus staged as a solo performance
On May 12 and 13, Oedipus Tyrannus will be presented for audiences aged 12 and above. The work is performed by a single actor and follows a story of trauma passed down through generations, with Haris Charalambous-Kazepis portraying Oedipus as a wandering narrator and musician-traveller in a contemporary city.
Translations presented in Cypriot Greek dialect and English
Translations, by Brian Friel, will be performed by a bicommunal cast in the Cypriot Greek dialect and in English. The play focuses on a small community confronting the first British mapping of the country, the anglicisation of Irish place names and a new national education system, as language changes and cultural identity begins to erode. The May 15 performance will include English and Turkish surtitles.
VIMA Art Fair curatorial project brings film programme
In mid-May, the curatorial project of VIMA Art Fair will bring its film programme to Rialto Theatre. Titled In The Waves Crashing, the programme features moving image pieces described as rhythmic interventions that move away from traditional narrative. Films by Adham Faramawy, Valentin Noujaïm, Thomias Radin and others will be shown on May 16 with English subtitles.
Tribute to Giorgos Zampetas
On May 17, the Diamantidou Cultural Association will present a tribute to Greek folk music composer Giorgos Zampetas through a performance combining music, theatre, singing and dance. Participants will include the Traditional Dance Workshop Alexandra, the Choir of the Friends of Cardiac Patients Association Alexandra, the Diamantidou School Theatre Group, a 10-member orchestra, the musical ensemble Echo of the Bouzoukis and soloists.
LOVE dance performance
On May 19, two dancers will perform LOVE, choreographed by Harry Koushos, presenting stories of violence, loss and survival. The performance will be in Greek and French, with subtitles in the same languages.
Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival begins May 30
The 27th Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival will run from May 30 to June 21. The programme will include choreographers and companies from Cyprus, Greece, UK, France, Belgium and Finland.
