Russian overnight barrage on Ukraine hits Dnipro, kills seven and injures dozens

Dnipro, Ukraine. A major Russian overnight attack on Ukraine killed seven people and injured dozens more after Moscow launched more than 660 drones and missiles, with Dnipro in southeastern Ukraine among the main targets. An apartment building partially collapsed in the strike, and authorities reported a second attack on the site during rescue efforts.

Apartment block hit and struck again

A large section of an apartment building in Dnipro collapsed after being hit, and four bodies were recovered from the rubble, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said. Authorities said the site was struck again in a daytime attack while rescuers were working there, killing one person and injuring seven.

Scale of attacks and damage in Dnipro

Moscow has been launching smaller barrages of dozens of drones every night at Ukraine, interspersing them with occasional large-scale attacks that use hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. Local media reported thick columns of black smoke in the sky on Saturday morning and warned residents about worsening air quality.

A Reuters reporter saw a Russian drone being destroyed in the sky over the damaged apartment block as rescuers worked in the rubble. Officials said more than 30 people in the city were wounded.

Official response and residents’ reactions

“Russia is deliberately prolonging its terror against our people, continuing to target critical infrastructure and residential buildings,” Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said.

At the destroyed apartment block in Dnipro, residents described grief and anger. “May their children sleep in their warm beds in Russia, and may everything be all right for them. Let them watch as Russia ‘liberates’ us of our apartments and houses,” said 37-year-old Aliona Katrushova, who lives in the building opposite.

Katrushova watched as survivors were pulled from the rubble. She said Saturday was her husband Oleh’s birthday.
