Nicosia, Cyprus. Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou and Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis met on Monday to discuss ways forward for talks aimed at solving the Cyprus problem. Stefanou said the meeting was “very creative and positive”.
Meeting and context
Stefanou said the two exchanged views on the current phase of the Cyprus problem in light of developments in the wider Middle East.
Views on the current impasse
He said it was a common finding that the ongoing impasse and stagnation did not help create conditions or a perspective for breaking the deadlock and continuing negotiations from where they left off, with the aim of completing the effort underway for years.
Position on resuming negotiations
Stefanou said the aim of resuming negotiations from the point they broke off at the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana in 2017 must be to reach a comprehensive solution that ends the occupation and reunites the place and the people on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
What steps do you think are needed to create conditions to resume Cyprus talks from where they left off?
