Themistocleous files candidacy to lead DEK ballot in Limassol district

Limassol, Cyprus. Andreas Themistocleous, leader of the Democratic National Movement (DEK), on Wednesday filed his candidacy at the top of the party’s ballot in the Limassol district. He described the move as the first time DEK is seeking entry into parliament.

DEK’s electoral bid

Themistocleous said the day was historic for DEK and expressed hope that voters would use what he called the right criteria. He said he hoped for a result that would give strength to the people.

He added that he hoped May 25, the day after the election, would be the first day of a future viewed with optimism.

Political background

Themistocleous first became an MP in 2013 after being promoted to the House as a member of Disy when Nicos Anastasiades vacated his seat to become president.

He failed to win re-election in 2016 and later joined Elam, regaining his place in parliament in 2021, before being ejected from the party four months after that year’s election.

Since then, he has sat as an independent in parliament and formed DEK in 2024.
