Where to Stay in Cyprus: A Guide to the Island’s Main Destinations

Nicosia, Cyprus. Choosing where to stay in Cyprus depends on whether visitors prioritise beaches, history, nightlife, family attractions, luxury accommodation or affordability. The island offers destinations ranging from lively coastal resorts to quieter villages and the Troodos Mountains.

Planning a stay in Cyprus

Travellers should consider whether they plan to rent a car, as some destinations are easier to explore on foot or by public transport. Coastal resorts are busiest during summer, while the Troodos Mountains can provide a cooler alternative in warmer months.

Paphos

Paphos combines beaches, a picturesque harbour, UNESCO-listed archaeological sites, waterfront restaurants and a range of hotels. It is suited to couples, history enthusiasts and first-time visitors to Cyprus.

The area offers historic attractions, a walkable harbour and sunset views, although its evenings are generally quieter than those in eastern resorts. Visitors seeking more active nightlife may prefer Ayia Napa or Limassol.

Limassol

Cyprus’ largest coastal city offers luxury hotels, a marina, shopping, fine dining and a cosmopolitan setting. It is suited to business travellers, food-focused visitors and those seeking urban convenience alongside a resort stay.

Limassol has luxury accommodation, restaurants and nightlife, but is less traditional in character and can be more expensive than other destinations.

Larnaca

Larnaca is a relaxed and relatively affordable destination that is home to Cyprus’ main international airport. It offers a promenade, sandy beaches and a local atmosphere, making it a suitable option for travellers without a rental car.

Its advantages include airport access, affordable hotels and a more local feel. However, it has a smaller resort scene than some other coastal destinations.

Protaras

Protaras is known for calm, clear waters and Fig Tree Bay. With villas, apartment hotels and snorkelling opportunities, it is among Cyprus’ leading destinations for families and relaxed beach holidays.

The resort offers safe, family-friendly beaches and a peaceful atmosphere, although nightlife options are limited.
