Wildfire in Pyrga Partially Contained After Threatening Homes

Pyrga, Cyprus. A large wildfire in the village of Pyrga was brought under partial control on Sunday after burning pine and agricultural land and threatening nearby homes.

The Forestry Department activated its Astrapi emergency plan, while ground and aerial crews continued efforts to fully contain the blaze.

Emergency response

The Forestry Department received reports of the fire earlier in the afternoon and launched a major operation, according to department spokesman Glafkos Kyriakou.

A total of 22 vehicles were deployed, while Forestry Department aircraft carried out water drops to support crews on the ground.

Fire brigade support

The Fire Brigade supported the operation with four staffed fire engines from stations in Larnaca and Nicosia.

The fire spread through arable land with crops and moved towards residential areas, damaging some yards.

Containment efforts

Authorities said the rapid response by ground and aerial crews prevented the fire from spreading further. Efforts to fully contain the blaze remained under way.
