Pas-de-Calais, France. About 1,200 people were evacuated from a campsite after two wildfires broke out near the beach in northern France, local officials said on Wednesday. One fire was under control, while the other continued to spread southward in difficult conditions.

Evacuation and firefighting conditions

The Pas-de-Calais prefecture said the affected campers were being moved to a shelter.

It said conditions remained “unfavourable” for one of the fires, with difficult access allowing it to spread unimpeded towards the south.

Active wildfire season

France and the wider European continent have been facing an unusually active wildfire season. A relatively wet winter encouraged vegetation growth, which later dried out during repeated heatwaves.

French Environment Minister Monique Barbut said earlier on Wednesday that the heatwaves could result in up to €15 billion ($17 billion) in direct and indirect costs.
