Aradippou council opposes migrant minors shelter plan over consultation concerns

Aradippou, Cyprus. Aradippou municipal council unanimously opposed plans to establish a shelter for unaccompanied migrant minors in the town centre, citing concerns about the decision-making process rather than the children themselves.

The proposed shelter would operate in an existing house near a primary school and public and private kindergartens.

Consultation and planning concerns

The municipality said it does not oppose unaccompanied minors or the state’s responsibility to protect vulnerable children.

However, it said the council had not been consulted or invited to express its views before the proposal was made. It also said there had been no public consultation with residents despite concerns within the community.

Location and approvals

The council said no study had been presented to support the suitability of the proposed location. It also questioned whether all required approvals, including those related to a change in the property’s use, had been obtained.

The municipality said major decisions should follow meaningful dialogue with local authorities and residents and be supported by appropriate documentation and transparency.

Call for cooperation

Aradippou municipality said it remains committed to the rights and welfare of unaccompanied minors. It called for stronger cooperation between central government and local authorities when planning such facilities.
