Sofia, Bulgaria. A threat against an Austrian Airlines aircraft prompted its diversion to Sofia late on Sunday, an airline spokesperson told Reuters. The service from Tel Aviv to Vienna was carrying 57 people.

Safe landing and aircraft search

Austrian Airlines identified the service as OS82 and said it touched down safely at 2042 CEST (1842 GMT). It said the threat had made a stop in Sofia necessary.

The airline said a search of the Airbus A320 AIR.PA was under way and that passengers would be booked on another flight after its completion. Those aboard comprised 51 passengers and six crew members.

Flightradar24 tracking data identified the aircraft as OE-LZE and showed that its planned Tel Aviv–Vienna journey had been diverted to Sofia.

Ministry account of the diversion

Sky News had earlier cited Bulgaria’s transport ministry as saying the landing followed a bomb-threat alert.

According to the ministry’s account reported by Sky News, the crew reported the alert while at the border with Romania and chose to make an unscheduled landing in Sofia. The report also said an Air Force fighter escorted the aircraft until touchdown, after which passengers disembarked.

Reuters sought comment from the ministry but received no immediate response.
