British bases customs issue nearly €11,000 in fines after summer seizures
Customs officers at the British bases’ crossing points seized tobacco products and e-cigarettes and issued nearly €11,000 in fines since July 1.

Pergamos, Cyprus. Customs officers at the British bases’ crossing points have issued close to €11,000 in fines since July 1 after stepping up inspections during the summer holiday period.
Largest seizure
The largest seizure occurred on July 4, when officers stopped two passengers travelling in separate taxis that arrived consecutively at the Pergamos crossing point.
Customs and immigration officer Katerina Christofi said officers suspected the two were travelling together and had chosen separate vehicles to avoid detection.
One passenger was carrying 13.1kg of hand-rolling tobacco and the other had 5.65kg. Combined fines of €6,300 were issued.
Second case
On August 4, customs officers found 2,400 cigarettes, 500 grams of hand-rolling tobacco and 600 electronic cigarettes concealed in the folding roof compartment of a convertible vehicle.
Summer enforcement
Since July 1, the bases’ customs and immigration service has seized 17,500 cigarettes, 21kg of hand-rolling tobacco and 5,500 e-cigarettes.
Around 115,000 vehicles crossed through the British bases’ crossing points during the same period. Fifty operational customs officers conduct inspections around the clock at the Pergamos and Strovilia crossings.
Christofi said officers maintain a 24-hour presence at both points to prevent the illegal movement of goods and enforce compliance with regulations.
