Nicosia, Cyprus. The Council of Ministers on Wednesday approved €4.8 million in funding to back recycling measures. Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis spoke to reporters after the cabinet meeting.

Purpose of the funding

Senekis said the aim is to give practical help to local government, ease the financial burden on citizens during the transition period and build the conditions for a more effective and sustainable waste management system. He said the proposals are meant to assist local authorities in improving waste management and organic waste collection.

How the money will be split

The funds are divided into two parts and will be distributed over three years, from 2027 to 2029. A total of €1.5 million is earmarked for communities to cover the collection, transport and management of recyclable materials. A further €3.3 million will go towards the collection and management of organic waste.

“Pay as you throw” scheme

Asked about extending the “Pay as you throw” scheme across Cyprus, the minister said the intention is to introduce it as soon as possible. Under the scheme, residents must buy designated bin bags for their rubbish instead of using ordinary bags from the supermarket. It forms part of the government’s efforts to cut waste.

Senekis added that the timing will also depend on the preparations made by local authorities.
