Cabinet renews CBC and CySEC board appointments, names academic to casino watchdog
Wednesday’s cabinet decisions give Ioannis Charilaou and Marios Papageorgiou further five-year terms and appoint Michalis Sirivianos to the casino regulator.

Nicosia, Cyprus. The cabinet on Wednesday approved renewed board terms for Ioannis Charilaou at the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) and Marios Papageorgiou at the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC). It also appointed academic Michalis Sirivianos to the casino watchdog.
Charilaou receives third consecutive term
Under the cabinet’s decision, Charilaou will continue in a non-executive role on the CBC board for another five years, beginning October 21, 2026, and ending October 20, 2031.
Charilaou, a chartered certified accountant, joined the board in October 2016. The renewal gives him a third consecutive term.
His earlier roles include the presidency of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC) from 2013 to 2015. He also sat on Hellenic Bank’s board between 2005 and 2014, with roles on both its audit committee and its risk management committee.
Papageorgiou’s renewal follows CySEC leadership changes
The cabinet granted Papageorgiou another five years on CySEC’s board. He first became a board member in October 2021.
Papageorgiou is a chartered accountant who graduated in economics from the University of Manchester. His experience covers international taxation and corporate advisory work, with previous roles at PwC, EY and Renaissance Capital.
He currently holds a tax management role at Melco Cyprus and has also chaired the audit committee at CySEC.
The renewal follows leadership changes at the commission just over a month earlier. On September 15, George Karatzias became chairman, while Loukas Lagoudis assumed the vice-chairmanship.
CySEC supervises investment firms, funds and providers of crypto-asset services. Its responsibilities include ensuring compliance with regulations and protecting investors.
Academic appointed to gaming regulator
In a separate cabinet decision, Sirivianos was named to the Cyprus gaming and casino supervision commission. His appointment runs until June 7, 2027.
