Nicosia, Cyprus. The office of gender equality commissioner Josie Christodoulou launched a campaign on Thursday featuring the experiences of seven women working in agriculture. The initiative seeks to give greater visibility to women’s contributions to rural development and to Cyprus’s economic and social progress.

Women’s experiences in agriculture

According to the office, the campaign, entitled “Women’s Stories–Rural Women”, explores the women’s everyday challenges, the different responsibilities they take on and the opportunities open to them in rural areas. A video presenting their experiences is in Greek.

The office said the accounts went beyond individual testimony, forming part of community history. It said they demonstrated how women help sustain farming, support local economies and safeguard traditions and cultural heritage.

Recognition and earlier campaigns

The office linked the launch’s particular significance to the United Nations General Assembly’s designation of 2026 as the “International Year of Agricultural Women”. It said the initiative recognised women’s essential contributions to agricultural production while drawing attention to the inequalities they still encounter.

The office has previously launched several comparable campaigns featuring women working in shipping, diplomacy and STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
