Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides held his first meeting on Tuesday with newly appointed United States ambassador John Breslow, focusing on security, bilateral relations and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Breslow said the two discussed the cooperation between Cyprus and the United States and projects on which the countries are collaborating.

Areas of cooperation

Breslow said he was “extremely happy” to be in Cyprus and looked forward to further cooperation with Christodoulides.

The meeting covered issues related to the visa waiver programme, energy and the presence of two major American companies in Cyprus. Bilateral cooperation in other sectors, including trade and security, was also discussed.

Air base visit

Breslow is scheduled to visit the Andreas Papandreou air base in Paphos as one of his next steps.

The air base is being expanded with American funding. The upgrades are intended to enable it to accommodate transport aircraft and support emergency or humanitarian missions.
