Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said Cyprus could not afford to work separately on national issues, stressing the need for cooperation in efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.

Speaking on Wednesday at an event organised by the youth trust association Koken, he said the government’s first priority was the resolution of the Cyprus problem, the liberation and reunification of the country.

Government priorities

Christodoulides said the government was seeking to strengthen Cyprus’ position through foreign policy, defence, the economy and state institutions.

He listed a clear Western orientation, stronger defence capabilities, a resilient economy and state reform among the government’s priorities.

The president said defence spending would increase in next year’s budget, describing the strengthening of Cyprus’ deterrent capability as crucial.

Foreign policy and regional ties

Christodoulides defended the government’s foreign policy, saying Cyprus had not had a clear foreign policy before joining the European Union in 2004.

As a small country under occupation, Cyprus faced real dangers, he said, making stronger defence capabilities and alliances necessary.

He also referred to Cyprus’ geopolitical position and its growing ties with countries in the region, noting that he had been in Egypt the previous day and that the President of Israel would visit Cyprus the following day.

Migration and employment

Christodoulides said migrant arrivals had fallen by 90 per cent, while returns had risen by more than 85 per cent.

He said Cyprus was no longer an attractive destination for illegal migrants and also pointed to falling unemployment.
