Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides took part in a sports event held under the BeActive programme at the presidential palace on Monday.

Participation and health benefits

Speaking at the event, Christodoulides said Cyprus was among the European Union countries where BeActive had recorded increased public participation. The programme was established during Cyprus’ first presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2012.

He highlighted the health benefits of sport, describing it as “not only exercise” but “a way of living”. He also spoke about his own passion for sport, saying it “lifts his spirit every day”.

Targets and new initiatives

Cyprus Olympic Committee president Yiannis Ioannou acknowledged the government’s support for sports events and said several new initiatives had been implemented.

He said the current goal was to increase participation from 160,000 to more than 200,000 people, adding that approximately 1,000 activities were planned for 2027.

Greek gymnast Eleni Petroulaki also attended the event and spoke about the benefits of sport and exercise in general.
