Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday that the Greek Cypriot side had accepted dates suggested by the United Nations for a meeting bringing together both community leaders and Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus.

Holguin visit expected before October ends

Christodoulides confirmed that Holguin would visit Cyprus before October ended, but said the United Nations would announce the timing. He said the proposed dates covered her arrival and a meeting involving the three participants.

He believed Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman would also have accepted the proposals and expressed hope that Tuesday would bring positive news.

Tuesday talks and possible crossing points

Ahead of his Tuesday meeting with Erhurman, Christodoulides said his sole objective was to secure positive developments. He described the discussions as ongoing and voiced hope for a favourable outcome.

Asked whether the talks could produce an announcement about four new crossing points, he said the Greek Cypriot side was prepared to proceed if its Turkish Cypriot counterpart responded positively.

Christodoulides said his side was also ready to advance other matters raised by the UN Secretary-General, covering the substance and methodology of negotiations as well as confidence-building measures.

When asked whether the Turkish Cypriot side had responded positively, he declined to answer on its behalf.
