New York, United States. President Nikos Christodoulides said he has not ruled out important developments towards the resumption of UN-led talks on a Cyprus settlement during the UN General Assembly, where the Cyprus problem is dominating his meetings.

Meetings on the Cyprus problem

Speaking on Sunday evening to members of the Federation of Cypriot American Organisations, Christodoulides said he would assess the results of what he described as a full week of meetings on Friday evening.

He said there was a perception in Cyprus that little might result from the week, but added that the Cyprus problem was central to his engagements.

Foreign policy and economy

Christodoulides said Cyprus had achieved results in foreign policy over the past three and a half years and had again become known in the United States for positive reasons.

He referred to Cyprus’ regional initiatives, its upcoming EU presidency in the first half of 2026, and Standard & Poor’s granting the country a category A rating for the first time since 2011.

He said the Cypriot economy was growing despite two wars, while public debt had fallen from approximately 80 per cent of GDP to 48 per cent and was continuing to decline. He said the government would further reduce public debt and noted that Cyprus had public surpluses.

Christodoulides said unemployment was approximately 3.6 per cent to 3.7 per cent, adding that Cyprus had been in full-employment conditions since 2008.

US investment plans

The President said he had visited the United States in 2025 to increase American investment in Cyprus and would return at the end of November to attend a Financial Times conference in New York on Cyprus.

He said he would also hold meetings in other states with companies interested in investing in Cyprus, adding that very important announcements on new investments by large American companies were expected soon.

Migration

Christodoulides said Cyprus was a model country on immigration, reporting a reduction of more than 90 per cent in arrivals and an increase of more than 85 per cent in returns.
