Larnaca, Cyprus. Customs officers at Larnaca airport seized around 28kg of cannabis from a 19-year-old holder of a British passport on Friday, the customs department said. The passenger had travelled from Thailand via Dubai.

Intelligence led to joint operation

In its announcement on Friday, the department said intelligence supplied to customs had led to an operation conducted jointly with the police drug squad (Ykan).

An X-ray scan of two large suitcases belonging to the passenger prompted suspicions. Officers then searched the luggage by hand and found cannabis in 26 airtight nylon packages, weighing approximately 28kg in total, including packaging.

Investigation into intended recipients

According to the department, the seized drugs were transferred to Ykan for further inquiries, including work to establish who was meant to receive them in Cyprus. The announcement also said Interpol was expected to be notified.
