Nicosia, Cyprus. George Pamboridis delivered 500 supporting signatures on Friday, meeting the minimum requirement to enter Disy’s internal contest to select its presidential candidate for 2028.

Signatures undergo verification

Pamboridis submitted the forms at Disy headquarters on Pindarou street, providing exactly the required number. The party was informed that additional signatures could be supplied if any needed replacement during verification.

Party employees have started reviewing the submissions to confirm that every person who signed holds party membership and is eligible to vote at the November 28 electoral assembly.

Averof Neophytou submitted more than 3,000 signatures on Thursday. Checks on the 500 needed for his candidacy have finished, while staff will also review the roughly 2,500 remaining signatures.

Formal candidacies due on Monday

The two contenders are required to register their candidacies formally at Pindarou on Monday, October 26. Neophytou has invited supporters to accompany him at 11.15am.

On Wednesday, Neophytou said he would ask party members for a confidence vote to contest the 2028 presidential election.

Pamboridis seeks pledge from losing contender

Speaking on a podcast earlier on Friday, Pamboridis called for an undertaking that the losing contender would not seek the presidency independently. His request appeared to refer to Neophytou’s recent statement that he would continue as a presidential candidate “until the bitter end”.

“There is no such commitment, and I want to hear it,” Pamboridis said. He added that he would not make such a pledge himself unless that commitment was given.
