Cyprus approves national strategy for multiple sclerosis
The cabinet has approved a national strategy to improve diagnosis, care, rehabilitation and research for people with multiple sclerosis in Cyprus.

Nicosia, Cyprus. The cabinet has approved a national strategy for multiple sclerosis, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides announced on Tuesday. He said the plan aims to strengthen care for people living with the disease.
National strategy
Speaking after the cabinet meeting at the presidential palace, Charalambides said nearly 3,000 people in Cyprus are living with multiple sclerosis, while around 100 new cases are recorded annually.
The strategy will establish a national registry of cases, promote early diagnosis and support investment in rehabilitation and research.
A committee will serve as an advisory body with defined objectives and timelines to be communicated to the health ministry.
“We are shaping a comprehensive, modern and people-centred care framework focused on the real needs of those with multiple sclerosis and aiming to continuously improve their quality of life,” Charalambides said.
Patient support and benefits
Multiple sclerosis affects the brain and spinal cord. Common symptoms include fatigue, blurred vision, light-headedness and muscle cramps, and there is currently no cure.
The multiple sclerosis association, founded in 1986, provides physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychological and social support to patients and their relatives.
The association has previously called for improved training for healthcare professionals, as well as greater investment in research and clinical development. It has said patients can face long periods of uncertainty before receiving a diagnosis, particularly where access to specialists is limited.
Legislation expected to be unveiled shortly will increase disability benefits and remove income criteria that had excluded some people with conditions including multiple sclerosis from state support.
