Nicosia, Cyprus. Electricity demand is being fully met and has begun to decline in recent days as temperatures ease, according to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO). Demand is expected to continue falling over the coming days.


Lower demand forecast

Assistant director of the TSO’s National Energy Control Centre, Charis Zavallis, said temperatures are expected to be around 39C and electricity demand is forecast to reach about 1,200 megawatts (MW) at midday.

He said the projected level would not create problems because of the large amount of photovoltaic generation available. Afternoon demand is expected to range between 950MW and 1,000MW.

Available capacity

Zavallis said there were no concerns over the adequacy of the electricity system, with 1,251MW of conventional generation capacity currently available.

He said demand is fully covered during both daytime and night-time hours, with reserves available to address any unexpected faults.

Summer peak

The highest electricity demand recorded so far this year was reached on July 23, when it stood at 1,372MW at 2.45pm. Demand fell to 1,099MW by 8pm that day.

Zavallis said it was highly unlikely that demand would exceed the July 23 peak during the remainder of the summer.

Cyprus-Greece interconnection

Asked about the proposed electricity interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, Zavallis said the cable would allow Cyprus to import electricity when needed and export surplus power.
