Limassol, Cyprus. Warships from Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Italy and the United States conducted a multinational exercise in waters south of Limassol on Monday, the National Guard said on Thursday.

The drill, named Cyprus Arrow, formed part of wider naval operations in the Levant.

Participating vessels

The exercise involved the National Guard offshore patrol vessel Ioannides, the Greek frigate Nikiforos Fokas, the US destroyer Paul Ignatius, the Italian frigate Carabiniere and the German frigate Baden-Wurttemberg.

Participating units carried out tactical movements, advanced manoeuvres, technical exercises and communications drills. Cooperation and coordination procedures were also tested at a multinational level.

Bilateral exercise with Italy

A separate bilateral exercise between the National Guard Naval Command and the Italian navy was held on the same day.

The PASSEX drill involved the Ioannides and the Carabiniere, supported by the Italian vessel’s EH-101 helicopter.

Crews practised communications procedures and techniques for identifying and verifying the identity of a suspicious vessel. They also conducted a consensual reconnaissance exercise, including mutual boardings and prescribed control procedures.
