Cyprus joins two conservation projects as EU commits over €390 million to LIFE programme
Two Cyprus initiatives will protect birds of prey and encourage communities and businesses to conserve biodiversity, within a €579 million investment package.

Nicosia, Cyprus. The European Commission will provide over €390 million for 135 new environmental and climate projects, including two involving Cyprus that seek to safeguard wildlife and reinforce biodiversity protection.
Funding across four areas
According to the Commission, the projects were chosen through the EU’s LIFE programme and are expected to generate approximately €579 million in overall investment, including the EU contribution.
Their scope includes protecting nature, advancing a circular economy, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and moving towards clean energy.
“The impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss and unsustainable use of resources are increasingly challenging the prosperity and wellbeing of European citizens,” said Jessika Roswall, European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy.
Protection for birds of prey
Under Raptors for LIFE, Cyprus will take part in efforts to conserve three species: the griffon vulture, Bonelli’s eagle and long-legged buzzard. The project is intended to address dangers such as unlawful poisoning and birds accidentally drowning in reservoirs.
Planned work includes modifications to power lines identified as high-risk and measures to make reservoirs safer. The initiative will also supply resources and training, support breeding in captivity and subsequent releases, and improve awareness in rural communities.
Community and business involvement
The other initiative, LIFE BioCommunities, involves six partners based in Greece and Cyprus. It aims to encourage Cypriot businesses and communities to help conserve biodiversity within Natura 2000 sites.
Its plans include greater citizen participation and entrepreneurship compatible with biodiversity protection. It will also develop a national brand for biodiversity-friendly activity, connected to an online marketplace.
“The quality of the selected projects illustrates the level of determination and professionalism of our partners across the EU,” Roswall said.
