Cyprus municipalities stage work stoppage over state funding proposal

Paphos, Cyprus. Municipalities across Cyprus held a three-hour work stoppage on Monday to protest the government’s latest funding proposal, with local leaders warning that inadequate support could lead to service cuts or higher charges for residents.

Acting Paphos mayor Angelos Onesiforou said strong and financially sustainable municipalities benefit all residents and play a vital role in public administration.

Call for stronger local government

Onesiforou expressed support for efforts to strengthen local government through dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders.

A similar protest was held at Yeroskipou municipality.

Concerns over autonomy and costs

Yeroskipou mayor Nikos Palios said the protest opposed central state intervention in the principles of local government, particularly municipalities’ administrative and financial autonomy.

He called for fair funding to prevent the cost of local government reform from being passed on to residents. Palios said the government was seeking to shift the financial burden onto municipalities rather than supporting them.

Through its actions, positions and omissions, the central state was effectively calling on municipalities to increase fees and charges for citizens, Palios said, adding that municipalities neither wanted nor considered this fair.

Union rejects funding claim

The Union of Cyprus Municipalities said it proceeded with the three-hour stoppage in protest at the government’s latest proposal, arguing that it would shift the burden of local government reform onto citizens.

The union said the proposal could force municipalities to reduce services or increase taxes and fees, rejecting the government’s claim that state funding would double.
