Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ waste treatment system can barely cope, MPs heard on Thursday, as Environment Department officials described the Pentakomo facility as a “ticking time bomb” when the government took it over from a private contractor. Officials said conditions have improved but remain “not optimal”.

Pentakomo facility

Since December 2023, the government has entered into 180 contracts for equipment maintenance and repairs, as well as fire-protection measures and environmental compliance.

Pentakomo, which has served the Limassol district since 2017, is set to receive a transitional contract estimated at €62 million. The work will include biogas management, repairs to the mechanical sorting system, upgrades to the biological leaching station and the installation of a biodegradable waste treatment system.

The planned system is intended to reduce odours, stop biological activity and prevent harmful environmental effects before waste is finally disposed of or recovered.

Paphos and Koshi

Paphos continues to depend on a landfill where waste is not treated beforehand.

The integrated waste treatment plant in Koshi, operating for 16 years, serves the Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta districts. Its annual capacity is 190,000 tonnes, while ageing equipment remains its main challenge.

A separate transitional contract for the Koshi facility, estimated at €100 million, is planned for repairs and partial upgrades. The tender is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2027, with the contract anticipated to be awarded in the third quarter.
