Agros, Cyprus. Projects to upgrade local water infrastructure will total more than €200 million by 2030, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis said on Wednesday. Speaking at the annual general assembly of the cooperative growers marketing union Sedigep, he outlined measures to support farmers facing difficult weather conditions and prolonged drought.

Long-term water planning

“Water cannot be addressed with short-term solutions, depending on rainfall and available reserves. It requires long-term planning, new infrastructure and greater resilience to the conditions shaped by climate change,” Senekis said.

He said the decision was intended to “give farmers a breather”. Further measures to increase water production would focus on desalination units, reducing losses in water networks and making better use of reclaimed water for irrigation.

The cabinet recently approved an additional allocation of 3.5 million cubic metres of water for irrigation, he said, bringing the total additional water provided to the primary sector to 7 million cubic metres in 2026.

Support for production costs

Addressing other challenges facing the sector, Senekis referred to two recent cabinet decisions involving emergency support plans totalling €1.5 million to help offset increased fertiliser and fuel costs. Applications will open on November 2.

He said that, as of 2026, €1 million had been distributed among 650 professional farmers and agricultural businesses. The total cost of extraordinary funding to address increased production costs amounted to more than €2.5 million.

Agricultural strategy and rural communities

Senekis also referred to the Common Agricultural Policy strategic plan for 2023–2027, which has total funding of €454 million. The plan aims to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of Cypriot agriculture by encouraging innovation and promoting more effective use of technology and knowledge.

He emphasised the importance of supporting rural farming, saying its preservation was not only about production but “means income, the use of the land and, above all, the opportunity for people to stay, work and create in their communities”.
