Cyprus will help Portugal with forest fires

President Anastasiades personally announced the decision to send firefighter team to Leiria area in Portugal as part of the EU programme for civil protection. Spain, France and Germany have also offered their help with the disaster.

The reason for devastating fires in Portugal was a lightning strike. According to the latest data, more than 60 persons have died. Responsible services are still struggling to take the fire under control.

Unfortunately, Cyprus is familiar with fire disasters. Last year forest fires in Troodos destroyed more than 18 sq.km of forested areas.
