Cyprus wine villages mark Transfiguration feast with grape blessing tradition

Nicosia, Cyprus. Wine villages across the island are celebrating the “grape wish” on Thursday to mark the feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. Vine growers take the first ripe grapes of the year to church to be blessed, marking the beginning of the grape harvest.

Longstanding tradition

Tradition scholar Anna Tselepou described the “grape wish” as one of the most important popular ecclesiastical traditions, particularly in grape-growing areas where vineyards form part of local history and lore.

She said such customs are valuable cultural heritage that helps preserve traditions and pass them from one generation to the next.

Ancient roots and Christian symbolism

The tradition predates the church, with references dating back to antiquity.

Within Christianity, it is linked to the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. The transformation of grapes into wine symbolises change and renewal.
