Lapithos, Cyprus. Debris believed to belong to a ship that sank off Kyrenia on Sunday washed ashore on Lapithos’s coastal walkway on Tuesday, while search operations for 20 missing people entered their third consecutive 24-hour period.

Debris and personal items found

According to a social media post by Turkish Cypriot newspaper Yeni Bakis, residents found the debris on the coastal walkway in Lapithos.

Fishermen separately found various items, including clothing and shoes, in the Vasilia-Orka sea area.

Search operation at wreck site

Searches at the wreck site are focused on two ships sent by Ankara to the north of Cyprus.

The TCG Işın, using an advanced sonar system and a robotic underwater vehicle, located an object at a depth of about 550 metres on Monday that is believed to be the sunken ship.

The TCG Alemdar joined the operation on Tuesday. Equipped with underwater salvage technology, the vessel is expected to attempt the recovery of bodies feared to be trapped inside the ship.

Statement by Unal Ustel

Turkish Cypriot leader Unal Ustel said the search for the 20 people missing in the maritime tragedy off Kyrenia was continuing with the participation of the two vessels.

He said he expected news from the wreck site by the evening, adding that authorities hoped to reach the missing people.
