Deep-sea rescue vessel begins search for sunken ferry off Kyrenia
The TCG Isin arrived off Kyrenia to locate and investigate a ferry believed to have sunk at a depth of 514 metres.

Kyrenia, Cyprus. The deep-sea rescue vessel TCG Isin arrived off the coast of Kyrenia on Tuesday morning to search for a ferry that sank shortly after departing for Turkey on Sunday. The ferry is believed to be 514 metres below the sea surface.
Search operation begins
Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel said on Monday that he believed the vessel would be reached on Tuesday afternoon.
TCG Isin commander Ulas Cesur said the operation would first establish the ferry’s exact location before a detailed exploration and investigation of the vessel and surrounding area begins.
Underwater investigation
Cesur said a remote-controlled underwater device would be used to search the ferry and its surroundings.
The TCG Isin entered service in 2017 and can conduct search-and-rescue missions at depths of up to 1,000 metres. Cesur said the vessel can carry out atmospheric dives to depths of up to 365 metres, below the reported depth of the wreck.
Items recovered
Surface search-and-rescue teams began recovering suitcases floating in the sea off Kyrenia. A life jacket also washed ashore at Karavostasi, near Lefka.
