€9.2m water pipeline replacement project begins in central Limassol

Limassol, Cyprus. Work has begun on a €9.2 million project to replace around 100 kilometres of ageing water pipelines in central Limassol, aimed at improving water quality, reducing leaks and lowering maintenance costs.

The Limassol district government (EOA) said the project is funded through the EU co-financed Thaleia 2021-2027 cohesion programme and is scheduled for completion in summer 2028.

Network upgrade

Speaking at the launch ceremony, EOA president Yiannis Tsouloftas said the project would modernise the city’s water supply infrastructure and improve residents’ quality of life.

“This is a project that upgrades, modernises and strengthens our city’s water supply infrastructure. It will significantly improve citizens’ daily lives while supporting Limassol’s modernisation and its path towards the future,” he said.

The new network will cover approximately 100 kilometres, serving an estimated 40,000 residents across 220 streets within an area of around 2.6 square kilometres.

Construction works

Construction is expected to take 24 months. The project includes the installation of new water mains using modern materials, excavation and backfilling works, and the restoration of roads and pavements after construction.

The works will cover the Enaerios area, extending along Makarios III Avenue to the central fire station and following the Garillis riverbed to Yildiz Street in the Tessera Fanaria area.

The route will then continue along Yildiz, Navarinou, Irinis, 16th June and Gladstonos streets to Pentadromos, before proceeding along Anexartisias Street towards the seafront.
