Earthquake in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush felt in Kabul and northern Pakistan

Kabul, Afghanistan. A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Saturday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, with tremors felt in Kabul and across the border into neighbouring Pakistan. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, while authorities said checks were ongoing.

Earthquake felt across border

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the earthquake had a depth of 100 km.

In Pakistan’s Swat district in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, residents ran out of their homes in panic, according to resident Daniyal Ahmad.

Residents describe panic

Ahmad told Reuters the shaking in Swat was strong and lasted for a considerable time.

He said people came out of their houses and that women and children were crying in panic.

Authorities monitoring situation

The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that there were no immediate official reports of casualties or damage, but checks were continuing.

The EMSC also reported that an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 struck Pakistan earlier on Saturday.
