Nicosia, Cyprus. A 42-year-old female police officer was arrested in Nicosia on suspicion of unlawful drug possession, and steps to suspend her from duty have begun.

The stop and the search

Police said in a statement issued on Tuesday that officers of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (Ykan) pulled over a car driven by the woman on a road in Nicosia at about 3pm on Monday.

A search of the vehicle led officers to find and confiscate 3.4 grammes of cannabis. They also seized four hand-rolled cigarettes containing cannabis and two further hand-rolled cigarettes, containing the same substance, that had been partly smoked.

Arrest and court appearance

The 42-year-old was arrested for illegal possession of drugs and placed in custody. She is due to appear before Nicosia District Court on Tuesday, when charges are expected to be formally brought against her.

Suspension and police response

The Chief of Police has directed that the process of suspending the officer from duty start without delay.

In the statement, the force’s leadership restated its zero-tolerance stance on any behaviour by its members that breaches the law, regulations or the principles of the police. It added that every case is examined with complete transparency and handled swiftly, with no discrimination and no exceptions.
