Kapparis, Cyprus. A fire broke out at a first-floor apartment in the Famagusta district’s Kapparis area on Monday evening, causing extensive damage. A neighbour injured his hand while attempting to put out the flames and was taken to Famagusta General Hospital.

Fire response

The fire service received a report at 7.02pm of a fire at a first-floor apartment in a residential complex in Kapparis.

Two fire engines from Famagusta Fire Station, Sergeant Adamou Adamou, responded to the incident. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 7.15pm.

Damage and injuries

The fire began on the apartment balcony and spread into the interior after the veranda’s glass enclosure shattered, according to the fire service.

The blaze and intense heat caused extensive damage to part of the apartment’s contents, as well as to wall paintwork and flooring.

A neighbour who tried to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived injured his hand. Fire service personnel administered first aid at the scene before he was transferred to the accident and emergency department at Famagusta General Hospital for further treatment.

The apartment tenant left the property safely before firefighters arrived.

Investigation

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire service said it has not ruled out that cigarette butts extinguished in a flower pot containing plants may have caused the blaze.
