Forestry department urges slower driving at night to reduce wildlife road deaths

Nicosia, Cyprus. The forestry department on Wednesday urged drivers to reduce speed outside daytime hours and exercise caution in wildlife-heavy areas to help prevent roadkill. It said some forest roads may be restricted or closed at times to protect animals as they search for food, water and breeding grounds.

Wildlife protection measures

The department said parts of the forest road network may face restrictions or closures to limit traffic and protect wildlife. It noted that young animals are especially vulnerable during these movements.

Threat to biodiversity

The department described roadkill as a real threat to biodiversity. Animals affected include foxes, owls, hedgehogs and snakes.

Advice to drivers

Drivers were urged to be particularly cautious on roads near forests, streams, agricultural areas and protected areas. The department also asked drivers to avoid unnecessary use of the horn, excessive use of high beams and sudden movements when they spot an animal on the road.
