Kourion, Cyprus. A new community initiative is encouraging residents to offer unwanted household items to others rather than throw them away. FreeCycle Kourion is based on the idea that an item no longer needed in one home may be useful in another.

Free local exchanges

Founder and administrator Bax Pulling said he created the Facebook group after noticing how many usable items accumulate in people’s homes. He launched it earlier this month, following the establishment of Kourion municipality.

Residents can offer items such as chairs, appliances, toys, gardening tools and glasses free of charge. Pulling said members do not have to give anything away to join and should not feel ashamed to ask for something they need.

Membership and collection

The group is intended primarily for people living within Kourion municipality. Prospective members are asked which community they live in, and administrators approve membership requests.

Items should normally be available for collection within the municipality to keep exchanges local and avoid long journeys.
