Athens, Greece. Greece is expected to sign a deal with Israel on Monday to acquire a multi-layer air defence system worth about €3 billion, according to two security sources cited by Reuters. The purchase forms part of Athens’ wider military modernisation programme.

Planned agreements

Greece’s security council has granted initial approval for the deal, which includes advanced short-, medium- and long-range missile systems.

Greek officials are expected to sign four agreements in Tel Aviv with the Israeli SIBAT and MAFAT directorates, covering three types of missiles and radar systems, one official said.

A separate agreement for an anti-drone system is also expected to be signed.

Military modernisation

Greece plans to spend about €28 billion by 2036 to develop the “Achilles Shield”, a multi-layer anti-ballistic, anti-aircraft and anti-drone system.

The programme also includes plans to buy up to 40 F-35 fighter jets from the United States and frigates from France and Italy.

Defence cooperation

Greece currently uses US-made Patriot systems, Russian S-300 systems and various short-range air defence systems to protect its airspace.

The country spends nearly 3.5% of gross domestic product on defence, a higher share than many NATO allies, amid its long-standing dispute with neighbouring Turkey.

Greece and Israel maintain economic and diplomatic ties and operate an air training centre in Greece. They also conduct annual joint military exercises and cooperate on anti-drone systems and cybersecurity.

Last year, Athens purchased 36 Israeli-made rocket artillery systems for about €650 million.
