Arsos, Cyprus. A Greek firefighting team undergoing training in Cyprus joined local forces to tackle a fire in Arsos on Monday afternoon, in its first operational mission on the island.
The team is in Cyprus under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s Prepositioning 2026 programme.
Training and deployment
The 21-member Greek team is based at the Platania forestry station. Before the incident, its members visited the Tripylos fire station, the Stavros tis Psokas forest station and areas of Paphos Forest as part of an operational familiarisation programme.
The department of forests briefed the team on surveillance and fire protection systems in Paphos Forest, including the road network, access routes and operational challenges.
Firefighting operation
Following a request from the fire department, a Greek team comprising 20 forest firefighters and four department of forests officers was deployed to Arsos.
Cyprus forces sent six fire engines and a tanker to the operation.
Joint cooperation
The department of forests said the operation gave the Greek firefighters hands-on experience in real conditions and strengthened cooperation between the two countries.
It said the first joint operation demonstrated the partnership between Cyprus and Greece in forest firefighting and their commitment to protecting forests and human life.
