Kyrenia, Cyprus. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said it received a distress signal on Sunday, August 30, 2026, from the Turkish-flagged passenger vessel “Filo Jet”, which was in danger about five nautical miles north of Kyrenia.

The centre said it offered to take over the search and rescue operation, but the Turkish Cypriot side said assistance was not required at that stage.

Coordination efforts

The JRCC said it received the distress signal at 12.13pm and contacted the Turkish Cypriot side through the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the relevant bicommunal committee.

It said it had requested that the Turkish Cypriot side be informed that the JRCC was ready to conduct the operation using available air and naval assets.

Priority on rescuing lives

“The sole priority was the rescue of human life at sea,” the JRCC said.

According to the centre, the Turkish Cypriot side stated that it did not require assistance from the JRCC at that stage.
