Kamares anti-flood works in Larnaca ahead of schedule
Anti-flood works in Kamares are progressing ahead of the July 2027 deadline, Larnaca’s district self-government organisation said.

Larnaca, Cyprus. Anti-flood works in the Kamares area are continuing ahead of schedule, with completion now expected before the July 2027 deadline, Larnaca’s district self-government organisation (EOA) said on Thursday.
The project aims to reduce flood risks in residential areas of the Larnaca and Aradippou municipalities affected by flows from the Kalo Chorio river catchment.
Flood protection measures
The works were deemed necessary following destructive flooding on December 13, 2014, which caused extensive damage to buildings in the Kamares area.
The EOA said the project should have been implemented by the state in 2015 but remained pending for years. Responsibility was transferred to the Larnaca sewerage board in 2023 as part of local administration reforms.
After the Larnaca EOA took over under the reforms, work focused on removing the embankment and pedestrian walkway upstream of the Kamares monument. A pedestrian bridge on stilts is also being built to allow the river to flow unobstructed and improve flood protection.
Next phase planned
The EOA is planning the next phase of the project, which will extend anti-flood infrastructure to protect the developing residential area of Vergina.
The organisation said the Kamares project is an important step towards improving public safety, protecting properties and creating infrastructure for a modern and developing Larnaca.
2014 flooding
Heavy rainfall in December 2014 caused the Tremythos river to overflow in the Kalo Chorio area, flooding nearby streets, homes and other premises. Cars were swept away in some cases while people were inside them.
Police reports said about 20 people, including children, were rescued from vehicles trapped in the water.
