Larnaca Salt Lake turns pink again as temperatures rise in Cyprus

Larnaca, Cyprus. Larnaca Salt Lake has turned pink again with the arrival of higher temperatures in Cyprus. The seasonal phenomenon is linked to increased salinity and the growth of algae and brine shrimp in the water.

Seasonal colour change

As temperatures rise, salinity levels in the lake also increase, creating conditions suitable for algae and brine shrimp. These organisms give the water its distinctive pink colour.

Spring contrast

In spring, the lake is pink for a different reason, as it hosts migrating flamingos. The birds get their colour from consuming the same organisms.

Protected site

Larnaca Salt Lake is part of the Natura 2000 European network of protected natural environments.

Short-lived phenomenon

The pink colouring of the lake lasts only for a few weeks.
