Limassol district launches water-saving plan as demand rises

Limassol, Cyprus. The Limassol district government (EOA) on Wednesday presented a multi-level plan aimed at supporting the government’s target of reducing water consumption by 10 per cent and improving water resource management.
EOA president Yiannis Tsouloftas said the plan combines a public awareness campaign, educational activities and water supply infrastructure upgrades.
Public awareness campaign
The campaign began in March with social media posts and videos encouraging people to reduce water use under the message that saving water is “easier than you think”.
It was followed by three videos featuring young Orpheas Solomou, who offers advice on saving water while cleaning pavements, washing cars and using washing machines.
The third phase includes television and radio messages and outdoor posters. The material refers to the Kouris reservoir and promotes collective responsibility for water conservation.
Further measures planned
Tsouloftas said three additional actions are planned: guidelines, proposals and information on water consumption; a children’s storybook and puppet show; and a children’s quiz and presentation.
He said everyone can contribute to water conservation efforts.
The EOA is also working to upgrade water supply infrastructure, including the replacement of 100 kilometres of pipes in Limassol city centre. The work is scheduled to begin on August 6.
Climate change and water supply
Agriculture Ministry permanent secretary Andreas Gregoriou said the ministry and the Water Development Department are seeking to increase supplies from non-conventional sources.
These include desalinated water for households and treated sewage water for irrigation.
Gregoriou said climate change is affecting Cyprus and requires efforts to preserve water resources and change consumption habits. He added that water demand increases by approximately 6 per cent each year.
