Limassol survey highlights persistent traffic gridlock and calls for overhaul of urban development model

Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol is facing persistent traffic congestion that residents say is worsening daily life and raising environmental and long-term concerns. A survey of 100 citizens conducted under the “Young Reporters for the Environment” programme recorded dissatisfaction with current conditions and the city’s development trajectory.

The survey findings describe Limassol as struggling with permanent gridlock that affects how residents live and travel and is seen as a threat to sustainability. The results are presented as indicating a need for an immediate overhaul of the city’s development model.

Planning pressures and population growth

Residents cited town planning that has not kept pace with rapid change, including chaotic vertical growth and over-urbanisation. Narrow streets were described as unable to handle current traffic volumes, while a concentration of workplaces in the city centre forces large numbers of commuters to use the same routes each day.

Road design, enforcement issues and disruptions

According to the survey summary, inefficient roundabouts and a lack of one-way streets hinder traffic flow. Residents also pointed to illegal parking and poorly timed deliveries as factors that obstruct transit during busy periods.

Schools and tutoring centres were identified as major bottlenecks at peak times, with vehicles clustering nearby. The survey also cited poor driving and disregard for the Highway Code, as well as poorly coordinated roadworks that frequently overlap.

Limited alternatives and car dependence

The survey also highlighted the absence of alternatives and a “car culture” as contributing factors to Limassol’s traffic problems.
